We’re working through a long process to update and revise the Couples Workshop Manual. During 2004 a wide range of input was collected from around the community, and early in 2005 a revised manual was issued based on that input.
Sophie Slade and Wendy Patterson have collected a great deal of feedback, indicating that Workshop Presenters had concerns about some aspects of the revision. At the Faculty meeting in May, Sophie led the faculty through a discussion of the major issues.
When we started, it felt like it might be an impossible task to reach consensus. Some faculty members vigorously opposed some of the revisions, which others felt were extremely important. For each of these points we would give everyone a minute to comment, so that everyone was heard, and then go around again if there was more. That helped everyone understand the various points of view, until we were able to find a solution which included everyone. Usually we found that the changes we needed to make as a result of this process were very simple, but that we had needed to really understand all the issues in order to find a solution which worked for us all. We were usually quite excited about the end result too!
Sophie has incorporated all these changes into the Workshop Manual, so that it now carries full faculty support. However we understand that many Workshop Presenters also want to be involved in this process. Therefore, Sophie is making available the current revision together with a digest of the faculty discussion, so that all may be heard and included in this revision process.
